I am doing some research for the BMA documentary film that I am making and I thought about other donations and transplants. I knew there was obviously going to be a difference between the likes of bone marrow and organ/blood donations but I thought I would share these with the BMAnation just to show how important it is to join the donor register.

Organ doantions:

Between 1/4/2011 – 31/3/2012

• 3,960 transplants from 2,143 donors
• almost 942,000 people pledged to donate organs after they died.
• Taking the total of people on the organ donor list to 18,693,549.

Blood donations:

• In 2009 1.6 million people donated blood

Bone Marrow:

• Anthony Nolan currently has over 400,000 people on their donor register.
• Currently worldwide there is 12 Million people registered.

More people donated Blood in the UK in 2009 than there is currently on the bone marrow donor register even though the procedure to donate bone marrow is almost the same as donating blood.

70% of people needing a bone marrow transplant cannot find a compatible match in their families and have to look to the generosity of strangers who are on the register, with 50% not being able to find a compatible match.

If this isn’t enough of a reason to join the bone marrow donor register today, Just think that cancer hits 1 in 3 and you could be saving the life of a loved one.
